Special Session with
Shelley Martinkus

Shelley will join us for a special session to talk about a wife's perspective. We'll have an extended time of Q&A so bring your questions for her!

What you'll learn

We'll try to strike a balance between the fundamentals and the advanced work of trustbuilding.  We'll cover topics like:

Empathy  Vs. Defensiveness

We'll talk about why defensiveness (and resignation) can be so easy to default to when our wives share their pain, as well as how to cultivate authentic empathy instead.

Healing in Triggers Vs. Avoidance

While we all want triggers to go away, we also know they are always right around the corner. We'll talk about how to engage triggers intentionally rather than feeling like they are to be avoided at all costs.

Dealing with Resentment

Sometimes we are stuck behind a wall of resentment and it prevents us from having the tenderness and care we actually want to give wives. We've got to tear that wall down.

Providing Reassurance and Building Trust

Reassurance comes from a combination of protecting our integrity and her heart. We'll show you practical ways to integrate these so that there is little room for insecurity to make its way in.

Cultivating Intimacy

We'll spend time working on the reality of true intimacy, what it means to cultivate it in our marriages, and how to navigate this delicate topic.

Meeting Her Needs & Ours

We want to meet our wives needs and requests, but its hard to do when our own needs are overwhelming. We'll teach you how to meet her needs without having to sacrifice your own.

Integrating Personal & Relational Recovery

Our recovery is personal - but for too many men it is also private. We have to integrate our personal recovery with relational recovery in order to build trust.

Lowering the Stakes

It can often feel like every conversation is high stakes and the relationship hangs in the balance. We can change that, and begin to reduce the anxiety for both us and our wives when a conversation needs to happen.

Informal Time to Connect

We'll also take some time to connect with God and each other through intentional but informal times.

FAQs

What will be expected of me?

We ask you to show up open handed, eager to receive encouragement, coaching and guidance. Please don't come to the event angry and defensive. We'll expect you to treat the other attendees and our staff with respect and dignity. We want to lead you into something new, not try to talk you out of something old.

What can I expect?

You can expect us to be vulnerable, authentic and direct. You can expect practical guidance - without a bunch of fluff. You can probably also expect us to make some mistakes.

Will I have a roommate?

Yes! All attendees will be paired to share rooms.  You might even have 2 roommates! We hope these connections turn into friendships for life. If you are attending with someone you know, then you are definitely welcome to room with them. Just let us know.

Is this going to be a rah-rah session for men? or a wife-bashing event? Or a husband-bashing event?

Those are the most common beliefs/assumptions we hear. No, it won't be a "good ol boys club". We'll hold our wives in high esteem. And no, it won't be a beat down for men.

Is this event for single men?

No, this event is for married men (though we understand some might be separated). Our heart is for redeemed marriages, and everything we teach in the weekend will be applicable to marital restoration.

Will I get individual time with a coach at the event?

Not as a matter of scheduled time. However, this is an intimate setting, with margin built in. So making space to have some 1:1 conversations with the staff is part of our intention.

Will my wife have confirmation of my attendance?

Yes! We'll confirm your arrival and check in at the event.

Will this conflict with other recovery work I am doing?

What you learn at this event should augment the other work you are doing in recovery and add to the marital restoration work you are already doing.

What role will faith play in the teaching?

This is a distinctly Christian event and our belief is that ultimate change is a function of our co-conspiring with Christ in the process of recovery. Further, we believe recovery is synonymous with sanctification. In other words, to be in recovery is to become like Christ.

What is the cancellation policy?

We do not offer refunds. If you cancel we'll certainly try to fill your spot, and if we can,  we will credit you the registration fee less $400.
